TAME YOUR TONGUE – 3

April 14, 2013

Let’s imagine a car making some strange cracking sounds around the wheels area. If you do not quickly fix that, it won’t be a spiritual attack if the entire wheel system of the car develops a major fault. The tongue if not tamed lights a small fire that can set an entire nation on fire.

However, one thing we all need to understand is that the problem is not really your tongue; the problem is your heart. Have you heard this excuse? “I don’t know what got into me. It’s not like me to say that. I don’t know why I said that. It’s totally out of character. I didn’t really mean it.” James would say, “Yes, it is. It’s just like you. You meant it. Quit kidding yourself. What’s inside your heart is going to come out of your mouth.”

Jesus said, “For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.” (Matthew 12:34) The tongue is tattletale on the heart. James 1:26 says If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain.

A tongue problem is a heart problem: A person with a critical tongue has a bitter heart, A person with a filthy tongue has an impure heart, A person with a harsh tongue has an angry heart, A person with a negative tongue has a fearful heart, A person with an overactive tongue has an unsettled heart, A person with a boasting tongue has an insecure heart.

On the other hand, a person with an encouraging tongue has a happy heart. A person with a gentle tongue has a loving heart. A person with truthful tongue has an honest heart and if you are being called a person with a sugar coated tongue, it means you have a honey dripping heart.

Three ways to avoid your tongue destroying you: Get a new heart. The Psalmist prayed “Create in me a pure heart, O God.” Secondly, ask God for help everyday. The Psalmist said “Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips.” (Psalm 141:3) and lastly, think before you speak. James 1:19 says “Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath”

My prayer is that your tongue will not pull you down but lift you up in Jesus Name. Amen!
