TAME YOUR TONGUE – 2

April 13, 2013

Imagine a husband, tired and grumpy, walks in to the house and yells at his wife. The wife yells at the oldest kid. The oldest kid yells at the baby sister. The baby sister goes out and kicks the dog. The dog bites the cat. The cat comes in and scratches the baby. The baby bites the head off the Barbie doll. Wouldn’t it be a whole lot simpler if the husband had just bit off the head of the Barbie doll himself? Lol!

The tongue is inconsistent. One minute we’re praising God, and the next minute we’re cursing people. One minute we can say something loving to our child/spouse, the next minute we can say something unkind.

James 3:7- 8 says “All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man, but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison” The tongue is capable of building up or demolishing. Just a few words can destroy a friendship, a marriage, a family, a church, a business empire. Mistakes of the tongue have destroyed more people, ruined more marriages, and cost more businessmen their jobs and their futures than any other kind of mistake.

“He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity” (Proverbs 21:23). The tongue can be likened to a solid iron gate. It could either shut enemies out or usher them in. As little as the tongue is, taming a wild dog is sometimes easier than taming it. Fire and swords are slow engines of destruction, compared to the tongue.

Joel Osteen said “You can change your world by changing your words... Remember, death and life are in the power of the tongue.” The Scottish people have some proverbs: "Keep your tongue a prisoner and your body will go free" and "A long tongue shortens friendships."

I pray for you that the good God will give you grace and strength to be able to tame your tongue every time and anytime in Jesus Name. Amen!
