In 1 Samuel 17, the Philistines gathered to battle
against the Israelites. Their captain; Goliath was a giant who by all
description was a physical representation of terror. To compound the issue, he
requested that the battle be a one on one battle. He said in verse 9, “If your
man is able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants:
but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and
serve us.”
Bible says in verse 11 that, “When Saul and all
Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly
afraid.” Immediately, they forgot how God showed His mighty powers over the
Amalekites, Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites and even how Jonathan was able to
defeat this same Philistines without enough weapons. For forty days, no one in
Israel was ready to go confront Goliath.
However, David understood that the same mighty God
that helped him kill a lion with his bare was able to help him kill Goliath.
Despite David’s campaign, Saul still was scared. I am sure when Eliab saw David
advancing towards Goliath with a sling and a stone, he was already mourning. They
didn’t understand that David’s weapon of warfare were not carnal but mighty
through God to the pulling down of strongholds.
I understand that sometimes our challenges blind our
eyes to the might of our God. Whenever we are confronted with a problem, we
tend to forget what our God has done in the past and start worrying about
whether we would be victorious or not. Sir/ma, listen, the same mighty God that
parted the red sea is still the same – He hasn’t changed and He won’t change. Stop
worrying about the size of your problem, your God is bigger than any problem.
Anytime you are confronted with a mountain like
problem, think back on what He has done in the past, He can still do it again.
