Nelson's Bible Dictionary defines "grace" as: "Favor or
kindness shown without regard to the worth or merit of the one who receives it
and in spite of what that same person deserves."
Grace is a gift from God the Father. It is not earned as one would
expect payment. It is not an obligation incurred by God for something we have
done. It is a gift; but what is a gift? A gift is something freely, or shall we
say voluntarily, given from the giver to the recipient.
Yesterday we said Imagine being caught by a road safety officer for
overloading. If the officer is merciful, he will let you go with a warning
instead of a fine, however, if you obtain grace from the officer, he will give
help you put some of the extra loads in his car and take to your home.
Ephesians 2:8 - For by grace you have been saved through faith, and
that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God.
"Save" means to rescue or deliver from harm or danger. Sin
endangers our soul by dooming us to eternal punishment, but God offers
deliverance. We do not deserve deliverance, so it is not of ourselves, but is a
gift of God. Hence it is of grace - unmerited favor.
It is offered to us only through faith in Christ so that we may
clearly understand that it is not obtainable by any adherence to the law.
"For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus
Christ" (John 1:17).
Someone said GRACE means God in the RACE of man. The law condemns even the best but grace saves
even the worst.
Grace and mercy are on a two sided coin. They are both needed by a
believer for everyday living. Heb_4:16 says Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain
mercy, and find grace
to help in time of
need.
As you journey in life, kindly remember that if is not of works, lest
any man should boast. It is all by His grace. I pray that you will for the rest
of your life enjoy the grace of God in Jesus Name. Amen!
