Matt 6:21
says, “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Have
you seen someone who just bought a new and expensive item? The person would
sleep late playing with the item and most likely wake up earlier than usual
just to check it again. That’s where the person’s treasure is, as such, that’s where
his heart is. Unknowingly and unconsciously, some of us have carved out gods
out of worldly things.
1Cor 8:5
says, “For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth,
(as there be gods many, and lords many,). When the apostle Paul received power
to heal a man who had never walked before, the people cried out: “The gods have
become like humans and have come down to us!” The people wanted to worship Paul
and his friend Barnabas. They called Paul Hermes and Barnabas Zeus, which were
the names of false gods.
Exo 20:3
says, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” What then does God mean by not
having any other gods BEFORE Him? I believe God was addressing the heart as
much as He was addressing outward religion when He gave these commandments. He
was talking about the things and people that take up the space in the heart of
man. He was talking about our aims and ambitions which often take priority over
Him and His will in our hearts. He was talking about anything we crave for or
anyone we long for more than God Himself. Yes, that's the idol that God talks
about in the first of the Ten Commandments.
Sir, who is
your God? Who takes the first place in your heart? That is your God. Is it a
spouse or a child? Is it a bank account, a car, an inheritance? Is it your
phone or your dress? Is it your house that you love? Is it a relationship that
you depend on to be your source of happiness and joy? Is it a habit? Check
yourself and repent. Remember, whatever contests for the place of God in man’s
heart dies.
