Wikipedia defines it as the quality of being modest and respectful. It
is derived from the Latin word humilitas meaning lowliness or submissiveness. Jas 4:10 says “Humble yourselves in the sight of the
Lord, and he shall lift you up.”
C.S. Lewis said that humility is not thinking less of yourself, it is
thinking of yourself less. It was pride that changed angels into devils; it is
humility that makes men as angels. Humility is the foundation of all other
virtues hence, in the soul in which the virtue does not exist there cannot be
any other virtue except in mere appearance.
In the school of Spirit, wisdom is gotten by humility. Humility is not
cowardice, but a spiritual power. Humility is the opposite of aggressiveness,
arrogance and boastfulness. Rather than “Me first”, humility would rather say “You
first, my friend”. Humility comes with the knowledge that the God’s creation as
a whole transcends our narrow interests.
Lack of humility got Pharaoh destroyed. Asides only him getting
destroyed, he used his own arrogance to destroy thousands of souls. Arrogant
words inflame prejudice and hatred, but humble speech soothes. Prov 15: 1-2
says “
It is only with humility that we can truly worship God and acknowledge
that He created all for His purpose and not for self-glorification. By humility,
we cool the angry passion of others. By humility, we can turn enemies into
friends.
Pro 22:4 says” By humility and
the fear of the LORD are riches, and honor,
and life.” In order words, it takes humility to be rich, great and honorable in
life because God resists the proud, and gives grace to the humble and without grace;
the race of a man will be perfumed with failure and shame.
The truth is what would be gained by humility far exceeds what pride
would bring. Be humble, show respect, put others first, speak ill of no one,
look down on no one and in no time, you head shall be lifted in Jesus Name.
